How to be authoritative and lead another – Jason Bourne (The Bourne Ultimatium)

What is it?

Character: Jason Bourne
From: The Bourne Ultimatum
Type: Action Stars
What is this clip about: Bourne has travelled to Waterloo Station to meet Simon Ross (a journalist from the Guardian Newspaper, who claims to know his past – which Bourne has forgotten since his amnesia in the first film – The Bourne Identity). The CIA are tracking Ross and Bourne must lead him away from their Grab Teams (who will arrest him and take him into thier custody).

Why should I watch it?
  • Bourne uses a variety of Alpha techniques to control Ross. He uses a strong, deep tone which Ross follows instinctively (Ross is a cracking Beta Male). When dealing with Ross, he reassures him when needed, he shouts at him if required. He reads Ross well and adapts his style to suit the situation.
  • Bourne stays calm throughout the scene, regardless of how pressurised it becomes with the various Grab Teams trying to get Ross. Even when Ross messes up and reveals his location to the CIA, Bourne stays calm and tries to rectify the situation. A good contrast to look at is how Calm Bourne is compared to the CIA guys – even when he is fighting them, Bourne seems completely at ease and in control.
  • Bourne has supreme confidence in himself and his skills. He is guiding Ross to safety, as well as monitoring where the security cameras are looking at, as well as ensuring he is kept hidden too – a multi-tasker! He uses his skills to blend in and does things almost on autopilot. You should aim to be like Bourne and become so skilled that you can run on autopilot towards your goals.
  • Bourne has a overall goal – which is to get Ross away from the CIA – but he keeps flexible and works with whatever happens at the time. Bourne starts by leading Ross one way but when Ross gets spooked and runs, Bourne takes stock of the situation and creates a new plan, involving himself in disarming the CIA operatives. Bourne is flexible and fluid with his planning, which helps him be successful (to a point anyway!).
  • The fight scene at the end rocks! Bourne being a true Alpha, kicks some serious ass!
  • It’s not hard to imagine that Bourne would be like this with a woman and she wouldn’t be able to resist.
How can I be like that?
  •  Don’t be afraid to raise your voice, it is allowed and in some situations needed. Practice in every situation possible. In nightclubs, pubs etc, talk louder as if the person you were talking to is a few feet further away than they truly are.
  • Try and monitor what you are saying. A lot of girls like to be lead but if you are always asking for reassurance or asking them a lot of questions, they will not take you as a leader, no matter how hard you try. Leaders lead and you should lead the interaction, lead the conversation and where you go and when. Girls want it and you should man up and do it.
  • Practise in social situations. For example, in a pub, take charge of the drink order, be the one who asks around the group, make sure people can hear you, stand up if everyone is sitting down. Take the position of power, ask direct questions and seek answers. People look for a leader in all situations, it is natural for most people to want to follow – be different and lead.
  • Become knowledgeable and skilled in multiple forms. Learn a lot about as many new things as possible things and learn how to do things, like car maintenance, house DIY etc. Become the ‘go to guy’ for people. People tend to follow people who can do things for them. You will notice that people just accept and follow people who others go to for assistance, it’s a social group thing. They want to be lead. People want to pass responsibility for themselves to another, to relieve themselves of the burden of making decisions for themselves – be the guy who makes the decisions for them!
  • Something that I recommend are improvisation and debating classes and similar events where you are given events outwith your control and you have to respond to them straight away. It helps you to think on your feet (like Bourne does) and if you practice it right, you can develop the strong, masculine style of leadership that Bourne uses.
So, what do you think – have I answered this well? Do you understand the term better now or do you have questions? Please let me know in the comments below.

I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
