I loved chatting to Brian, as poor mental performance is something I have struggled with, after being bullied at Primary School I tend to self-sabotage, and hide in the shadows, and my confidence severely lacking when I was in a sporting contest. After listening to some of Brian’s material, I felt I finally found an approach that would work and became a massive fan, and I know you will too. His system is more than just feel good sound-bites, they actually work, and I am seeing success from following his teaching and after listening to this episode, I know you will on your way too.

  • The stages of coaching success from a new client
  • How confidence is a choice
  • The need to use your headlights to view the next 200 yards
  • The different kind of jobs you should have.
  • How you should set up your life to pursue greatness and be the best version of yourself.
  • 1-word focus
  • The habits and behaviors of elite performers
  • How to maximize your talent – it’s not born, its created by processes
  • The ‘Well, better, How’ analysis protocol
  • Avoiding sulking and over-thinking after a mistake
  • Feelings are not facts.
  • Signal lights and how to view your athletic performance like driving a car
  • How you can connect with them

KEY POINTS TO REFLECT ON

In this interview, a lot of jewels of self-improvement are discussed. Some of these and their associated thoughts include:

  • In everything you do, there is a mental performance aspect involved and can affect if you succeed or not
  • Growth does not happen by accident – you need a clearly defined plan, and to put the work in. Set measurable, reasonable goals, and monitor and measure as you work. Make sure you are working intelligently and intentionally towards your goal.
  • You never rise to your occasion, you always sink to the level of your training
  • Systems are key to your success.
  • Begin with the end in mind. How can you reverse engineer your goal and work from the end back – It a lot easier to plan how to get there if you have a clearly defined goal and work back from there.
  • We are goal seeking machines.
  • What do you need to put in place to emulate others who have been successful? Success leaves clues – what do you notice about other elite performers in your chosen area, what do they do differently? How can you build a system of training and work, to develop your skill set and mental growth in these areas to excel overall. Utilize what works for others, by incorporating what works, adapting it to suit your needs and working the system daily.
  • Confidence is a choice, not a feeling. Everyone gets scared or feels fear before a big event. Confidence is a state. Do not let your feelings dictate your actions, let your actions dictate your feelings. What you do changes how you will feel, so if you act confidence, you will feel confident. Practice every opportunity you can, and build up that in your mind until you believe it with every strand of DNA of your being.
  • Fake it until you become it. Believe you are the best, the fastest etc, and focus on what you can control and not on outside noise. Make a list and focus on what you can control.
  • Make anchor statements to allow yourself to enter the state of confidence. Act as if you already are and add in statements that reinforce your actions.
  • Feeling sorry for yourself is a worthless and wasteful emotion.
  • Sleep, movement, nutrition, mindset are important areas to dial in, listen to the episode to find out what to focus on for each area
  • Reflect on your behavior, your friends, your habits and actions – are they aligned to your goals, to what you want in life or setting you further back? Reflect, revise, action – repeat!
  • Failure is positive feedback – the goal is to learn!
  • Make your actions a process, so they can be repeated, consistently over time
  • Fear and self-doubt are a good thing, they are healthy. It is a good reminder that you need to focus on your peak performance processes.
  • You can’t control everything, but you can control yourself and how you react
Brian doesn’t just talk about it, he does it! He made an amazing transformation and has the pictures to prove it!

Conor McGregor’s trainer tells the amazing story of his long road to success in the world’s fastest-growing sport

Growing up in Dublin, John Kavanagh was a skinny lad who was frequently bullied. As a young man, after suffering a bad beating when he intervened to help a man who was being attacked, he decided he had to learn to defend himself. Before long, he was training fighters in a tiny shed, and promoting the earliest mixed-martial arts events in Ireland. And then, a cocky kid called Conor McGregor walked into his gym …

In Win or Learn, John Kavanagh tells his own remarkable life story – which is at the heart of the story of the extraordinary explosion of MMA in Ireland and globally. Employing the motto ‘win or learn’, Kavanagh has become a guru to young men and women seeking to master the arts of combat. And as the trainer of the world’s most charismatic champion, his gym has become a magnet for talented fighters from all over the globe. Kavanagh’s portrait of Conor McGregor – who he has seen in his lowest moments, as well as in his greatest triumphs – is a revelation.

What emerges from Win or Learn is a remarkable portrait of ambition, discipline, and persistence in the face of years and years of disappointment. It is a must read for every MMA fan – but also for anyone who wants to understand how to follow a dream and realize a vision.

How can we be our strongest selves in life’s most challenging situations? We often approach these situations – job interviews, difficult conversations, speaking up for ourselves – with anxiety and leave them with regret. Moments that require us to be genuine and powerful instead cause us to feel phoney and powerless, preventing us from being our best selves.

Harvard professor Amy Cuddy shows us we need to stop worrying about the impression we’re making on others, and instead change the impression we’re making on ourselves. Cutting-edge science reveals that if we adopt behaviours reflecting power and strength, we liberate ourselves from the fears and doubts that obstruct us. By redirecting our thoughts, actions, and even physiology, we free ourselves to be our best.

Amy Cuddy galvanised viewers around the world with her TED talk on ‘power poses’. Now she explains the science underlying these and many other fascinating body-mind effects, and teaches us how to use this science to become self-assured in high-pressure moments.

Impassioned, beautifully researched, and accessible, PRESENCE is filled with stories of individuals facing real obstacles, and succeeding against the odds. Every reader will learn how to approach stress-filled challenges without fear and leave them without regret.

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
