THE GUEST

Today’s guest is Dan Dworkis.

Dan Dworkis, MD PhD, is a board-certified emergency physician and the founder of The Emergency Mind, which brings together lessons from experts in the emergency department and beyond on developing the tools it takes to succeed during times of crisis and apply knowledge under pressure.

Dr. Dworkis received his MD and a PhD in molecular medicine from the Boston University School of Medicine and performed his residency training in emergency medicine with Harvard Medical School at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham Health. He has worked in some of the largest and busiest emergency departments in the country and is currently an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

In this interview, we discuss his story, the Emergency mind, how to utilise the mindset of an ER doctor to complete your goals, overcoming fear, skill development and how to use the habits and tactics of the Emergency Mind to thrive under pressure and perform at the next level when it truly matters.

  • The 4 pillars of the Emergency Mind
  • How to make peace with the fact that you will not be able to control everything

KEY POINTS TO REFLECT ON & LINKS MENTIONED

In this interview, a lot of jewels of self-improvement are discussed. Some of these and their associated thoughts include:

  • The Emergency Mind can be learnt, you are not born with it, or cursed without it. But you need to believe that you can learn it!
  • We are all going to face emergencies in our lives, and we will always revert back to the level of our training in those situations, so we should build up a quality skillset to deal with high pressure, and intense situations, and Dan’s material is top notch information on this.
  • New challenges and situations will be nerve-wracking and fearful, and the fear will always be there but it can be overcome. You need to take opportunities to experience situations  in your training and in less critical situations that mimic real emergencies but with with a reduced intensity to practice your emotional control, critical thinking etc in situations like this. So when you enter a proper emergency, you can revert back to the level of your training and know that you will be able to perform at your best. You have the choice on how you will react, the emergency will happen anyway, you have the opportunity to shine and adopt the Emergency mind to succeed.
  • Approach your development the Kaizen way, through continuous improvement. Look to learn and develop in the piece-by-piece mentality, to reduce the stress and focus on fine tuning the skills in each area.
  • Never stop learning, continue to push yourself and grow, to reach new heights all the time. Break skills down into subsets of it, learn it, review it, teach it, speak it, do whatever you need to truly understand it.
  • How can you use the 4 pillars Dan identified to use your training time more effectively and how can you use the pillars on your approach to work, approach to emergencies etc
  • You will not be able to control everything in an emergency, as I have learnt on this show, the experts focus on controlling the controllables and ignoring the others. Focus on what you can do and help/change/improve. You will not be able to fix everything and it is not always possible to make any impact, but control what you can act on and you will be able to help in some way.
  • Accept that we will die. We are not guarenteed the next heart-beat, so like Dan says, use the ones you have just now to help, to love, to act and to grow, and by doing so, in my opinon, you will make the world a better place, rather than hiding your true potential.
  • If you only focus on the outcome, over performance, you place value on yourself based on the outcome. Instead focus on the perfomance, control what you can control and give your best service, by continually training your skills to the best level you can. Show respect and focus on the emergency in hand, focus on your performance and let the universe decide the outcome.
  •  What you do the day before affects your current day. Work through each day imagining how the actions will help your future self tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. What habits, procedures and routines can you put in place to really help yourself ot improve?
  • Look at how training can be linked together with cross-cutting principles so you can use new techniques, equipment etc that you have not been able to train with, by using similar understanding, skills and experience from similar training
  • Be a master of your craft but at the same time, be open and honest about not knowing everything, and open to recieving information and assistance from team members. Learn to trust in others, understanding the importance of trust and delegation of tasks and responsibilities and understand the team is there as a collective unit to complete the task, it is not a competition, remove the ego, trust one another and see the team flourish.

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
