THE BASICS

Today’s guest is Jay T. Maryniak, who became addicted to drugs and alcohol at a young age. By the time he was twenty years old his life had spiraled out of control and he hit rock bottom in November of 2005. He finally reached out for help he needed and got sober and healthy. Jay spent his time keeping fit participating in martial arts, Cross-Fit, endurance events to name a few, and finally got sober. Fitness helped to keep him busy and to do something positive, as he worked towards overcoming his addiction. If that wasn’t enough, in 2013 at the age of 28, Jay was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He now faces another big obstacle in life but he doesn’t let that stop him from crushing every obstacle in his path. Jay has over 12 years of experience training clients and helping them change their lives. He finds true purpose in helping others to achieve their goals and be better people. He looks forward to helping everyone of you achieve your fitness goals and be ready to overcome any obstacle that stands in your path to greatness!

In this interview we discuss his story, addiction, how you can change your story, red flags to watch out for, methods to stay sober and how you can transform from addicted to awesome.

SOME THINGS TO REFLECT ON

In this interview, a lot of jewels of self-improvement are discussed. Some of these and their associated thoughts include:
  • Bad things can happen to everyone but it doesn’t need to be the end of you, you can change if you want to. What happened to you does not need to define you, you can change your story and change what you get from life if you really want to do it.
  • Reaching out for help is not a weakness, it is a sign of strength to show that you realise you need help and seek it out
  • To really overcome bad habits, stop trying to fight them to extinction, look to change bad habits with more positive ones to reprogram your brain
  • Drink can hide away your problems, but is never a fix to actually dealing with your problems.
  • You are the average of the five friends that you hang out with, make sure the five people are on the next level, and the people that give you a good average overall
  • There is always hope and a way to get help and change your life, it may not seem like it at the time, but you can change. The first step will be the hardest but it will change your life to do it.
  • No matter how bad a relationship gets, there is a way back, you can work to fix, heal and regrow a friendship or relationship with a family member
  • When you are wanting to make a massive life change, start small. Pick a small goal like just go to the gym at least once a week and do one thing. Just get into the habit of moving forward, picking a goal and accomplishing it. Don’t overburden yourself, you just need to regrow some self-esteem to start helping change your life.
  • You may have slip ups and make mistakes again after changing your life, but don’t give up. Learn from them – what caused it, how can you prevent it again, reset yourself and start again, you know what went wrong and why, now learn from it and go again.
  • Talk to people – your friends, family members, therapists, anyone that will listen. Like Jay says don’t bottle things up, ask for help as you need it, see your doctor if you need medical help, see services offering talk therapy and AA programmes etc. There is the help out there, the hardest step is the first one but like walking, once you start and build momentum, its so much easier to keep going.

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
