THE GUEST

Today’s guest is Mark Beaumont.

Mark is an athlete, broadcaster & ambassador. He is best known for cycling around the globe in under eighty days, but there is much more to the man than that.

Using a decade of world firsts, he redefines the meaning of Endurance and what we are capable of, and uses these inspiring stories to help businesses and people perform better.

Mark Beaumont’s documentaries, events and books about ultra-endurance and adventure have taken audiences to over 100 countries. Outside of sport and broadcasting, Mark is a father, business ambassador and speaker, as well as working with a number of charities and educational organizations.

In this interview, we discuss his story, being ‘The guy who cycled around the world’,  the preparation, what it taught him about what we can achieve in life, how you can prepare for your own challenge, how to build self-resilience and belief in yourself, and how you too can achieve your dreams.

WHAT IS DISCUSSED

In this interview, we discuss gems like:

  • Who they are
  • Did his time during homeschooling promote his interest in traveling the world
  • The trait he has that helped him do so many amazing things
  • Should we all do a large challenge and push ourselves outside of our comfort zone?
  • What were his opinions of the different cultures that he experienced
  • How he worked out what he could do if he truly pushed himself … not just what he needed to do to take the record
  • How he set his targets
  • His amazing level of self-belief and the importance it can play in what you can achieve
  • How he selected the members of his support team
  • How his abilities as a leader changed during this project
  • How did he train for his around the world expedition
  • What he discovered about inter-personal relationships during the challenge
  • How has he changed as a person after achieving his dream and smashing the record
  • What capsizing taught him about how people react to stress and pressure compared to others
  • How has he coped with Quarantine during this difficult time
  • How becoming a father has changed him as a person
  • Where his passion for story-telling comes from
  • How do you overcome fear and doubt of your abilities and your potential

  • How you can connect with them

KEY POINTS TO REFLECT ON & LINKS MENTIONED

In this interview, a lot of jewels of self-improvement are discussed. Some of these include:

  • It does not matter how you were raised or where you are that dictates what you can do, it is what you believe in yourself that matters most.
  • You won’t regret most experiences, but you will regret never trying.
  • Endurance and adventure are a level playing field open to all.
  • Taking on challenges can help you build the fire in your belly.
  • Comfort is great, but it leads to very dull stories and some regret. Do what you want to do for you, not to impress others.
  • Past experiences give the sum of what you can do in the present. The more you try new things and challenge yourself, the more likely you are to build the resilience and belief you need in yourself to achieve bigger and tougher goals.
  • An essential part of a team is not their skills but their ability to work under pressure and not destruct when challenged.
  • There is a massive difference between knowing what to do and ACTUALLY doing it.
  • Find the right support team for you to work towards achieving your goals. You do not need to know everything, and be everything to the project. There are amazing people, tools and other support methods available to you, to help you on your way. You can then focus on the task at hand.

All rights to GCN. This is close to where I was raised and holds a special place in my heart … plus it looks a tough cycle!

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
