He’s someone that should be respected for what they have accomplished in their life and looked as a role model and inspiration to us for becoming better and hitting that Next Level in our life. After serving his country, Jay exploded onto our screens as the mole in a series of the popular TV show ‘SAS: Who Dares Wins’. He became a standout feature on the show and as his amazing past accomplishments and experiences came to light, along with his drive for continual evolution and challenging himself, I knew I had to feature him on the show to learn more about him and how we can become more like him.

In this interview, we discuss his story, his time in the SAS, military life, the need to challenge yourself, his TV career, the creation of Thrudark, how to overcome fear, and how to use special forces philosophies and training protocols to better your own performance.

KEY POINTS TO REFLECT ON & LINKS MENTIONED

In this interview, a lot of jewels of self-improvement are discussed. Some of these and their associated thoughts include:

  •  Jay realised when he was younger that his strengths and interests did not lie in academic pursuits, and instead chose a career that allowed him to pursue his passions and use his strengths. You can do the same – their is no chosen path for you, you do not need to do what society or your family or friends expect of you, you can choose your own path. You only have one life, use it to chase your dreams, not those of someone else.
  • All men need hardship in their life. You require a challenge, to grow and develop. Challenge yourself, build your resilience and find out who you truly are, by always looking to challenge yourself.
  • You are the average of the five people you associate most with. Jay spent time with strong willed and disciplined team mates, they build strength through unity, and overcame the challenges that they would face.
  • Failure can always been a positive, mistakes should be seen as a learning experience, a reference point to work on, to fix or improve from. You only truly fail when you give up.
  • Repetition of skills and environments, can help you overcome the feelings of fear. Fear will always be there but repetition of training and scienarios will help you rise above the noise, smells etc and focus on the task in hand. Other top performers have said how you tend to fall back to your level of your training, so make sure your training is at the highest level possibly, so your fall back point is at elite level.
  • Elite soldiers training covers all areas of performance, including cardio, strength etc. Do not neglect areas of training and rely on your strengths only. Work on your weaknesses and always look to improve yourself, even 1% more than yesterday in some are of your life.
  • Expose yourself to as many different challenges, stimuli and environments as possible. By experiencing challenges and pressures in training, you will strengthen your mind and and be able to rely on your experience and skill-set built during training, when the shit gets real.
  • Top performers are typically normal people, who are very driven, alpha, highly focused and work extensively in their training and performance, typically more than normal performers are willing to do.
  • Do not go to your death bed without finding out first what you are truly capable of
  • Find a way to challenge yourself as much as possible, keep pushing, keep evolving and learning more about yourself, your ability and it’ll help you grow and become a better person for it.

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
