THE GUEST

Today’s guest is Bobby Holland Hanton.

Bobby is a stunt-man who has completed some of the most inconic stunt-work in a long list of some of my favourite films. He is known for his work in Inception (2010), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Skyfall (2012). His recent stunning work for Chris Hemworth in Netflix’s ‘Extraction’ was a prime reason, that Chris now uses Bobby for all his stunt work and working exclusively together.

Bobby started his career as a Gymnast, and climbed through the ranks to compete as a National Squad Member and National Gold Medalist for Great Britain. Bobby retired from Gymnastics at 17 and turned his attention to football, becoming a semi-professional footballer for Fareham Town FC at the age of 19. With his huge appetite for performing unabated, he started to perform in Live Action Shows, Pantomimes, various TV Shows and worldwide modelling campaigns & commercials for major brands. Bobby then trained in all the disciplines needed to achieve the goal of becoming a Stuntman, which took the best part of 4 years (training full time). This meant qualifying in skills such as Kickboxing, Swimming, 10m High Diving, Gymnastics, Trampolining, and Scuba Diving. Since then Bobby has performed in 44 full feature movies that will be on your most-loved list, alongside a who’s who of A-list star actors.

In this interview, we discuss his story, how he overcomes fear, similarities he sees in the top performers he works with, his training, working on a film set and so much more.

KEY POINTS TO REFLECT ON & LINKS MENTIONED

In this interview, a lot of jewels of self-improvement are discussed. Some of these and their associated thoughts include:
  • Bobby has been the stunt double for a high number of A-list celebrities, using his core skill-set to act for various people, mimicking their look and actions in addition to performing dangerous stunts. What transferable skills do you have, that you could use to go into a new role, ask for a promotion, start a business etc and mimic the top performers in that industry and become a success like Bobby?
  • Bobby works with a support team covering all the techniques and equipment are using. He relies on these team members to keep him safe and able to complete the repeat shots that the films needs. Stop trying to do everything yourself, there is no need to. Find a support team or network to assist you towards your goals.
  • Bobby rehearses the moves and actions he will do in a stunt repeatedly, well before he is recorded on camera doing the stunt. It is this preparation, rehearsal and skill development that works so well, Bobby ensures that he has mastered the performance before the cameras are there, which gives him the confidence to feel ready, by ironing out mistakes away from the lights and camera, and then he can before at top level when the pressure is on. Like most top performers, Bobby utilises his training to lock down the skills he needs and ensure he is comfortable with the pattern. How can you reverse engineer your physical goals, and start organizing your training to cover and develop the movement patterns, skill work etc needed and routinely completed, so that when you are competing or the pressure is on, you can work at top performance level as everything becomes automatic and natural to you.
  • As Bobby says, ‘no one is average’, we all have something unique and special that we bring to whatever we do in our own way
  • There is always things to learn, you have never mastered something. Stay humble, stick with a growth mindset and see opportunities and training time as a chance to learn and develop yourself.
  • Look to improve yourself at least 1% per day in some area of your life.
  • Build strong friendships by being there for the other, be open and honest, and showcase your true self.
  • Fear will always come. You need to find a ritual or routine that you can use to enter the zone, that allows you to switch into high quality work, where you can switch off focus on unneeded stimuli and focus on the task at hand.

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
