TODAY's GUEST IS James Tomlinson!
Today’s guest is James Tomlinson!
James martial arts journey started as a 10yr old, chubby, bullied kid. Craving an escape from being the school punching bag he found TaeKwonDo. One effective self-defence technique and three classes later, the kid was addicted to martial arts. At the same time he found weight training and he quickly transformed into a man child!
This sparked a 15 year journey of fitness and fighting that lead him to move to Melbourne JT won a national championship in 2006 and an international competition in 2007. At the same time he was constantly improving his physical conditioning knowledge, on his way to becoming one of the first certified kettlebell trainers in Australia. At the start of 2008 he found Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. It totally kicked his butt! After this point, his passion for learning martial arts took a new path and he started to conceive ways to get stronger and fitter for this new challenge. He quickly became the go to guy to ask about improving physically for BJJ. Traveling, training and competing for extended periods of time in Brazil, the United States and Canada enabled JT to see how jiu-jitsu was evolving at the highest level. His constant quest to find the most effective training methods would continue to give him a competitive advantage on the mat. From that time, he has worked with multiple world-champions as well as some of Australia’s best grapplers Having experienced his own battles with injury and seeing others suffer the pain of time lost on the mats, JT wants to help more people roll better for longer using the right training.
James is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black belt who trains under the ADCC absolute bronze medallist Lachlan Giles in Melbourne Australia. James is known worldwide for his partnership with Joey Worthington, together they co-founded Bulletproof BJJ, which is a strength and mobility program designed for BJJ athletes who want to perform at the best of their abilities, but the pair noticed how most athletes are plagued with niggling injuries and how the majority of grapplers are stiff, sore and under-performing. They believe that every grappler can continue to improve on the mats, and live a strong, pain-free life with some knoweldge and training methods, and with a combined 25 years training, competing, and coaching, they will show what it takes to thrive in BJJ. Bulletproof For BJJ helps reduces niggling pain, fix muscular tightness and joint restrictions, help you build better athleticism and faster recovery, with the focus so that you can perform optimally in every training session. It’s time for you to start your journey towards better athleticism & less injuries today

KEY POINTS, Links & Actions
Here are some key points that I would advise you to concentrate on
- James crossed trained, where he has trained in a number of different sports, cross training can help you develop faster by improving your fitness and muscles, deepen your martial mindset and more.
- A lot of our current ideas about what you need to do to be mobile, healthy and able to train Jiu-Jitsu are incorrect.
- Rehab, mobility, flexibility etc are not dirty words.
- Use their fantastic BJJ warm-up routine here.
- To truly develop your BJJ, you need to develop your physical self to be able to physically perform the moves safely and effectively.
- BJJ unfortunately is very hard and taxing on the body. You need to have an effective movement, rehab and recovery protocol that you can follow to deal with injuries and wear and tire issues.
- Don’t let your ego make you work in a way that let’s you show off but suffer later on.
- Learn how to deal with BJJ Injuries here so you can recover, heal and get back on the mats quickly.
- Martial arts can be a great way to teach children self-defense, help build their confidence, make friends and learn discipline.
- BJJ is a great way to develop your physical self, to lose weight, improve your endurance (for BJJ), gain strength through strength training, and learn to control and use your body …. possibly for the first time ever!
- Surgery is not a get out of jail free card for recovery and performance.
- Find out how to balance BJJ training and strength training by watching this video.
- You should focus on your own health and fitness. You can create a health habit that you can do as a warm-up, cool-down after class etc, it doesn’t need to be life defining, but everyone should have a body maintenance regime.
- Working and maintaining your physical health and ability, may not be sexy but it certainly helps allow you longevity to stay on the mats going forward.
- When you are making changes in your life, make one change in your life at a time, allocate suitable time and actually do the work then. Stop trying to change everything and doing nothing at all in the end! Pick one thing and focus on it, and make it a habit you focus on it directly.
- This is an individual area of development, what works for one person will not always work for others. There are some key areas and guidelines that will work for all, but your fix might need particular moves, training and focus.
