KEY POINTS, Links & Actions

Here are some key points that I would advise you to concentrate on:

  • Those who don’t read are no further forward than those can’t. Reading is a literal superpower to changing your life for the better!
  • Books contain the expert wisdom of the millions who have lived before us. They demonstrate how to level up in life, with a shortening learning curve.
  • You can level up and learn on your commute, lunch hour and so much more. While others are wasting their time talking about TV, you can be learning on a variety of topics.
  • Allow yourself to read across topics, across authors and areas. Let your interest spread, and read the things that interest you. Then as you look around, you will be drawn towards things that you are struggling with, and then look to help change the challenges you are facing.

“Reading is not enough … you need to take action on what you learn”.

  • The person you will be in five years, is shaped by the media that you consume and action from – choose wisely!
  • If you want to meet new friends and accountability partners, you can meet like minded people who want to get more from life by joining fan clubs, book clubs, comment sections of your favourite book or self-development person and the like or googling groups on topics on sites like Meetup.com and similar. Those who are in these groups, tend to what to improve themselves and will want to do the same things as yourself.
  • Reading a book isn’t enough, you need to apply the learning, and use the teaching to grow and evolve in life.
  • You can level up all areas of your life by a book, even one idea from a book can be a life changing return for a small investment.
  • There are millions of book options, millions of authors and different viewpoints and cultures. When you encounter a problem, there will be a book that can help you fix it!
  • Nick recommends reading biographies to help get you back into the joys of reading, when it has not been a habit – it gets you into reading, but keeps you interested in the topic of the person you are a fan of!

“Repetition leads to retention”.

  • Aim to take one key learning from everything that you read.
  • A lot of the big personalities that you will want to emulate, are average people like us, they have just perservered and taken action, failed, tried again and again until they found what worked and keep finding out what did. Average people stop trying, successful people keep going. Don’t give up.
  • Once out of school, you are not bound by what you can read, you can source books that inspire, teach, grow, heal and motivate you. There are books for all types of people, for all interests, like your freak flag and read to be a better man and level up!
  • If you have low funds, sign up to your local library or visit charity shops, and you can find a lot of great resources for very low costs.
  • Look at the greatest people, people who you look to as role models, many will have been inspired, changed and become who they are by the collation of their life changes and the books they have read – a small Google search can find the books that changed them, and you can then read them as well, without the discovery time the role model needed to apply!
  • Nick recommends the following books as a good place to start: ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’, ‘The 4-Hour Work Week’, ‘The Compound Effect’.
  • Your growth and journey is exactly that … yours! You can read books, and implement things at your pace, in your own style and with your own focus – it is not anyone else’s journey but yours. Stop living the life others expect, and instead chase the one you want from life!
  • You need a way to track your actions, measure what you do and see what comes from these. Nick recommends an activity tracker that helps you measure your activity and track your progress to keep you on track and hold yourself accountable towards achieving your goals.
  • You can start trying to read by allocating a 15 minute period, replacing a low impact activity and doing that twice a day, you can easily read 20 pages a day, and it roughly works out to 20 books a year at that pace without having to give up social media and all other fun things in life!
  • Reading helps you grow but it can be a challenge to finish. Our society leans towards instant gratification and we need to realise the joy of reading and working towards a goal and not leaning towards a dopamine hit.
  • If you don’t like reading, try using Audible first, so you can listen to a book rather than read, to get that spark of reading, growing and learning again.
  • You can read for entertainment as well as education and growth. You can read for fun, but a book can change you, your views, your understanding of the world and help you grow as a person. A book can change your life, it doesn’t just need to entertain you for a while!
  • You should read with intention, Nick recommends writing the reason you are reading the book on the inside cover, so you are consistently reminded why you are reading, to keep you motivated and focused on the end goal, so you work towards a goal rather than just for enjoyment.
  • Men need to realise our ego is holding us back – it stops you growing, stops you trying new things or being willing to fail. Failure is part of the process, you learn and grow from it. Read books on Stoicism to learn how to deal with the ego.
  • Nick recommends building an accountability group with like minded people, people who will inspire you, hold you accountable to your goals, share your experiences with, suggest improvements etc – you are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with … choose wisely! Find people who help you grow, not crabs that will pull you back into the bucket of the comfort zone with them!

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
